Determination: What It Really Means

We’ve all heard the word determination thrown around, but what does it actually mean?
According to Merriam-Webster, determination is:

“The act of deciding definitely and firmly; also: the result of such an act of decision.”
-
“A firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end.”
Out of all the definitions I read, these stood out most. Why? Because they carry weight. They’re not just about deciding something, they’re about committing to it. Determination is that inner grit that keeps you moving forward when things get hard, inconvenient, or uncomfortable.
Determination Is Personal
What you’re determined to do will look different from what I’m determined to do. For you, maybe it’s showing up at the gym three days a week. Maybe it’s finishing a degree, writing a book, or launching a side business. For someone else, it could be thinking more positively each day or finally applying for their dream job.
Whatever it is, determination starts with a decision, and it grows through action. It’s not about taking one giant leap; it’s about the small, consistent steps you take every single day to make your goal a reality.
My Early Lessons in Determination
Looking back, I realize I’ve been practicing determination much longer than I thought. As a kid growing up in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, I was a busy little pinball bouncing between Tae Kwon-do, ballet, gymnastics, horseback riding, and golf. My parents poured their time and energy into giving me and my sisters these opportunities. I’m forever grateful for that.
Even then, I gave my whole heart to each activity. I wanted my black belt in Tae Kwon-do. I wanted to graduate to the next ballet class. I wanted to compete in horseback riding and golf tournaments, and I did. Those early experiences taught me how to set goals, work for them, and see them through.
Determination in My Athletic Journey
Fast forward to adulthood, and that same mindset carried me into CrossFit. When I first walked into a CrossFit gym, everything felt new and challenging, Olympic lifts, gymnastics movements, the intensity of the workouts. But something clicked in me. I was determined to learn, to grow, and to see what I was capable of.
Years later, that determination took me to the CrossFit Games, seven times in a row. It’s what drives me now as a coach, entrepreneur, winemaker, and advocate for living with strength, intention, and authenticity.
And it’s still a daily practice. Every training session, every meal prep, every early morning and late night, these are all deposits into the bank of my goals. Determination is built in those small choices, not just the big milestones.
