Six Rules That Changed My Life

Over the years, as an athlete, coach, entrepreneur, and just a human navigating the ups and downs of life, I’ve learned that strength isn’t only built in the gym. It’s built in the moments that test you, when things don’t go your way, or when life forces you to slow down and reflect.

These six rules have helped me find balance, build resilience, and stay grounded no matter what life throws my way.

1. Let it go

Don’t ruin a good day by holding onto a bad yesterday.
We all have moments we wish we could redo,  mistakes, missed opportunities, words we can’t take back. But carrying yesterday’s weight into today only holds us back. The truth is, you can’t move forward if you’re gripping the past with both hands. Take the lesson, release the rest, and allow yourself to be present in the moment you’re in right now.

2. Ignore them

Don’t let other people’s opinions dictate how you live.
There will always be voices, some loud, some subtle, trying to tell you what you should do. But the people who criticize from the sidelines rarely understand the full story. Live a life that empowers you. When you stay aligned with your values and purpose, the noise fades and your confidence grows. Remember: what others think of you is none of your business.

3. Give it time

Time is the great healer, and the great teacher.
Wounds may not close overnight, but with patience, pain transforms into wisdom. Every setback carries a lesson, even if you can’t see it right away. Be patient with yourself. Growth takes time, and healing isn’t linear. Some days you’ll move forward, some days you’ll pause, but every step counts. Trust that the process is shaping you into the person you’re meant to become.

4. Don’t compare

The only person you need to beat is who you were yesterday.
Comparison is the thief of joy, and in today’s world, it’s easy to fall into that trap. But your journey is your own. Progress might look different for you, and that’s OK. Focus on your own lane, your own goals, your own growth. If you’re improving, even just a little, you’re already winning.

5. Stay calm

It’s OK to not have everything figured out.
Life rarely goes according to plan. There will be detours, pauses, and unexpected turns. The key is to stay calm when things get uncertain. Breathe. Ground yourself. Sometimes, not knowing the next step is exactly where you need to be, because it opens the door for growth, creativity, and new possibilities.

6. It’s on you

You are the one responsible for your happiness.
At the end of the day, no one else can walk your path for you. It’s your job to build a life that lights you up,  to chase what you’re passionate about and give it your all. Don’t wait for permission, and don’t hand your power to someone else. You are the author of your story. Make it one you’re proud of.

Final Thoughts

These six rules aren’t about perfection, they’re about perspective and reflection. They remind me to stay grounded, patient, and true to myself, no matter what’s happening around me.

If you’re in a season of change, challenge, or uncertainty, I hope these rules help you find your footing again. Because life will always throw us curveballs, but when you stay true to who you are, let go of what no longer serves you, and keep moving forward… that’s where real strength lives. It may not be easy at times but taking it one step and a one day at a time can help.

Stay true. Keep moving. Just Gaux.
